We see here a body verses brain, carnal versus mental, or flesh versus logic dilemma in the sin battle being waged within the individual. It is as though the mind is having trouble getting the ground troops to respond to the orders being sent out from ‘HEADquarters‘ onto that vast fleshy continent where the battle is being fought. Yet Paul – by faith – declares our inevitable victory even though, as of yet, it has not been fully verified by our personal actions. Paul, in his former pharisaic life would know well how to present outward displays of seeming holiness, which were really impression-making and spiritual on-ups-man-ship… ‘Keeping up with the ‘Holy Jonses‘. No wonder he so passionately received the real good news and was so ready to teach and peach the gospel – and even lay down his life for it.
